This is a very beautiful and informative map of the moon. However, it's listed as a 2016 edition, and this edition does not have the "Lunar Incognita" updated. (That's the section in the extreme south-western portion, mostly on the far-side, with some of it overlapping into the near side, that does not have much detail in it.) This area has been photographed. Also, in the crater Hirayama (just into the far side, but still in the libration zones visible from earth) the large crater in the north of it (Hirayama Y) has recently been named "Tolstoy," in honor of the Russian novelist.This brings me to the libration zones. It's good that they have them dashed on the far side map. This lets us know what craters may be visible from the earth during favorable librations. But they really ought to dash the near side with the libration zones, to indicate what craters and features are NOT visible during unfavorable librations.However, this map just does not provide enough views of the Moon. It has the near side and the far side, but the eastern and western, as well as the northern and southern edges are always foreshortened. It would be great if National Geographic made four (4) more views of the Moon: one for the eastern hemisphere (with Mare Marginis, and Mare Smythii toward the center of view), and the 0-degree meridian on its left edge and the 180-degree on its right edge; one for the western hemisphere (with Mare Orientale in the center of view),and the 0-drgree meridian on its right edge and the 180-degree meridian on its left edge; one for the northern hemisphere, with the north pole in its center and the equator on its edge; and one for the southern hemisphere, with the south pole in its center and the equator around its edge. There would also have to be the markings for the libration zones.This would make for three maps, each with two views of the Moon, but I think it would give a complete picture of the Moon without the inconvenience of a globe.
It's a great poster but....the lamination is thin and cheap. Not worth the $10.00 extra. It can't be thicker than 1Mil. In the future I will purchase non-laminated Nat Geo posters only and have them laminated at my local office supply store in 5 Mil lamination at less than half the price.
Little pricey but you aren't going to find a more detailed. better quality map of the Moon anywhere else. I recently had the displeasure of purchasing some other maps that were taken straight from google search, blown up, laminated and a price tag slapped on them.This is not one of those. Would highly recommend.
I have had the original from when the Nat Geo first included it in the magazine decades ago. I moved offices and the map was torn in removing it. This is a replacement for my new office.
My brother asked for this poster and two others for his birthday present. The posters are from National Geographic and are the high quality you would expect from them. He is greatly pleased with all three posters and is having them framed to hang in his room.
